‘I don’t think I’ll get to see it ever again:’ Rare winter storm brings Bay Area residents, snowmen to snow-covered hillsides

With his bright orange Line Stepup Skis propped up over one shoulder, a blue helmet on his head and ski poles in his hands, Jay Sayre trekked up Seaview Trailhead off Grizzly Peak Boulevard searching for a snow-covered grassy meadow to ride.

After learning how to ski as a 2-year-old growing up in Colorado, the 28-year-old said having access to snow was one of the reasons he wanted to go to UC Berkeley for his doctorate. He just didn’t expect it to be right down the road rather than somewhere in the Sierra.

“Oh, perfect,” Sayre said, making a quick detour on his way to the top of Vollmer
