Photos: Violent winds from rare “bomb cyclone” leaves destructive wake in Bay Area

With gusts of more than of 81 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service, winds knocked down hundreds of trees across the Bay Area. Three people were killed by falling trees on Tuesday, in Portola Valley, Rossmoor in Walnut Creek and Oakland. A big rig truck on the Bay Bridge toppled over and blocked most eastbound lanes for hours Tuesday night.

By Wednesday morning the lingering storm had dissipated with winds calming down to 12 mph in San Jose.

Crews were assessing and repairing damage to the Lefty O’Doul Bridge near Oracle Park in San Francisco. The 90-year-old historic bascule bridge was battered by storm-pushed barges.
