Re: “Empty storefronts go far beyond downtowns” (Page A1, April 1).

Prime real estate is deteriorating as prices for rent increase. We see this problem all through the Bay Area. These abandoned lots and buildings now serve as homeless camps, turning customers away from nearby businesses.

As property owners continue to hike the price of rent year over year, they look for short leases to then increase the rent further. Small business owners want to lock in a longer leases and find the best price possible. This is a
