Milpitas has yet to start the search for a new city manager after not renewing Steve McHarris’ contract

A month after the Milpitas City Council opted not to renew City Manager Steve McHarris’ contract, the city has yet to start a search for his replacement, prompting concerns about who will run the city come June.

McHarris, who was appointed to the job in 2020 after briefly serving as interim city manager, is the third city manager the council has gone through since 2017. The city has been plagued by staff turnover in recent years.

After a special closed session meeting Feb.2, Mayor Carmen Montano announced the council had opted not to renew McHarris’ contract. Montano, along with Vice Mayor Evelyn Chua and Councilmember Gary Barbadillo voted to
