Brush fire threatens homes in San Jose foothills

SAN JOSE – Crews on Monday afternoon battled a brush fire in the San Jose foothills.

The fire was reported just before 3:30 p.m. near Sierra Road and Varner Court, said San Jose fire Capt. Jesse Allread.

“With the winds that we’re having today, it quickly spread,” Allread said in an interview at the scene.

Allread said the fire covered seven acres and threatened 10 to 15 homes on Suncrest Avenue, as well as a school and a church.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
