SANTA CLARA — Arguably the best competition of 49ers training camp surfaced during practice No. 2 on Thursday.

Sure, all eyes remain locked on Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, but that’s not a man-vs.-man dogfight.

Instead, once the ball releases from their hand, if it’s going toward Deebo Samuel, and if Jason Verrett is covering him, ooh boy.
